Artist Statement
I respond so strongly to two things, the natural world and bold marks on paper, and I embrace them both in my artwork. I am inspired by the resilience and transformative beauty of the land above and the supporting rock beneath. In the natural world I have seen that what is struck down, crushed, cut or splintered is not destroyed, but rather remains and carries on even though greatly transformed. By using unique geological structures and forms in nature, I draw parallels between the human experience and the natural world. I incorporate images of resilience, defiance and reverence and make use of hidden images in code.

Images and themes are revealed to me in the tactile and strenuous process of mark making. By using acrylics, gouache, graphite and oil inks on the impressionable medium of paper, I can forcefully express my emotions against the opposing strength of a wall, floor or table. I rarely use a brush in a traditional manner.

Artist Bio
Artist Biography

Anne Doris-Eisner is a painter whose works have been exhibited in many solo, group and juried shows in Connecticut and around the country. In recent years Anne has exhibited at the New Britain Museum of American Art, Housatonic Museum of Art, Westport Arts Center and Mystic Arts Center, all in Connecticut, and the Beverly Arts Center of Chicago (IL), American Jewish University (CA), The Women's Museum (TX), the Rubin-Frankel Gallery (MA), and the Kraft Center for Jewish Life at Columbia University (NY).

Anne works almost exclusively on paper because of the immediacy and physicality of mark-making on that medium. Anne enjoys working with large sheets and most often uses non-traditional tools found in nature, such as feather, twig and bone, to capture the resilience and transformative beauty of the natural world and its expression of our capacity for resilience, defiance and renewal.

Anne studied art at the University of Miami and earned a B.A and M.A in Art Education from Southern Connecticut State University. Anne was a distinguished art educator for many years, including winning Teacher of the Year and the Joseph B. Whitehead Educator of Distinction Award, presented by the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation, for exemplary dedication to the field of education. Anne's continued study of art has led her to residencies at the Atlin Art Centre, in far northern British Columbia, and the renowned Vermont Studio Center. Anne is a past president of the Women's Caucus for Art, CT.
