Artist Statement
I have been attracted to and photographing the human face for 30 years. This body is a departure from my original portrait work. My traditional method demanded sharp focused, environmental locations mixing both available and strobe light.
This new work echoes the origins the photography. I am exploring the working methods of early portrait photographers whose equipment was not of today's standard. My equipment is an old 8x10 studio camera and lens from the 1930's. Due to the mechanics and characteristics of the lens, the focus is shallow. I am working in a small studio with limited available light, which forces my subjects to hold still and due to the length of the exposure, not smile.
I have purposely focused close and filled the frame with my subject's faces. I make the eyes the most important point in each frame letting other sections fall out focus. I believe that the eyes are our truth-meters. They show our secrets, desires, wants and needs even if every other part of th
