Artist Statement
I begin a project when an idea reinforced with a feeling emerges. This feeling navigates between fear, anger, and desire. It motivates me to execute the idea, and it sustains me until the idea has been completed.
For the series of sculptures I have been working on over the past year, I use a pulpy mud-like substance to hold the twigs in place and build my structures into organic shapes. The end result evokes something in between a termite mound, a fossilized skeleton, and a totemic tribal structure. The viewer can see the growth patterns of the branches in the twists and turns of the sculpture.
My drawings are more than just the residuals of the sculptures. They take on an added meaning and capture an immediacy of expression that the slow process of making the sculptures cannot.
