Artist Statement
My work is functional first. I want to drink coffee from the mug I made, and eat soup from my bowl. I want to put flowers in my vases and candles in my candlesticks. I delight in every part of the process, from forming a vessel from a dull lump, to trimming the excess clay so that the form emerges, from applying the chalky glaze to opening the cooled down kiln to see the rich colors. The possibilities for working with clay are endless, so I am always experimenting. This often causes heartbreak when the piece which is beautiful in my mind turns out to be atrociously ugly. But I am compelled to continue.
