Artist Statement
From the collaboration between Liz Pagano, a New Haven print and mixed-media artist, and Hayne Bayless, a potter in Ivoryton, Sideways & Askew was created, where paper and clay collide to produce artful illumination.

Born about five years ago when Liz brought some luminaria she made, embellished with ink and encaustic, to sell at Hayne's holiday studio sale. A light bulb went on, literally. They decided to try their hand at working together fabricating lamps from Hayne's pottery and Liz's paper.

Hayne does the metalwork for the lampshade frames, creates the base and then electrifies it. Liz then does her thing creating the material for the shades and puts them together. From there they have grown to using a number of different materials including concrete, stone and wood for the bases.

Who knows what they will come up with next ... they certainly don't!
