Artist Statement
I use the copper foil method of stained glass construction in building my pieces. My body of work consists of panels of stained glass meant to filter light, as well as more tactile sculptural pieces, depicting everyday objects rendered in glass. Each of my designs is original in that I don't use patterns, but rather build each piece until it reaches a completion. Many of my window designs are framed within salvaged window panes. My work is composed of a wide variety of glasses, from machine rolled, to handblown, to glass no longer in production, to pieces rescued from old churches. I incorporate the technique of plating in many of my works combined with the use of found objects, jewels, bits of metal, etc. I also employ my skills as a painter in some cases, by treating the glass as a canvas using transparent paints.
I began my own business, JAK Designs in 2007 providing custom pieces. I also do repair and restoration work and teach classes in the craft of stained glass.
