Artist Statement
The postcard works deal with our evolving societal identity. We must accommodate ever widening categories of color, ethnicity, religion, self-image, gender and its roles, and even violence. As our culture becomes ever more diverse, our interactions become more complicated; but at the same time we become more accepting of a wider variety of individuals and relationships. Thus we move from a series of more isolated, insular cultures to a more diverse, complex one.
As a result of a lifelong love of learning and books, I have turned to the pursuit of altering discarded books as a way of prolonging their lives, and altering their trajectories. The book's place in our lives is changing as a result of technology, as surely as my place in life is changing as a result of age, time of life, change of career, etc.
At first, it was hard for me to deface a book, but when this feeling passed, I have been reenergized by the possibilities in altering books.
