Artist Statement
I make several different kinds of things. Sometimes the subject makes the object (content drives process). Sometimes the object makes the subject (process drives content). Materials and methods depend on message. I want to learn more and make better things and make things better.

Henry Vee Ai Ai Ai - 2011 - oil and hair on acrylic sheet - Each panel 24"x36"

Juxtaposes an image of Chinese dissident artist Ai Wei Wei, inspired by his self-portrait, with that of Henry VIII in a similar pose from the famous portrait attributed to Hans Holbein. The men resemble each other in their defiance of authority figures of their times. Four panels in all, which can be interchanged so that Henry and Ai are nude, or are dressed in their own clothes, or are dressed in each other's clothes. The nude portraits acknowledge vulnerability; exchanging clothes provokes ideas about power and who really wields it: a king may be a common citizen compared to a pope; a citizen who can attract the world's attention may be more king than the king himself. Hair, caught between panels, emphasizes these are flesh-and-blood individuals as well as historical figures, whose actions had/have real-world consequences for themselves and their followers. The title is a pun on Henry's Roman numeral 8 said aloud, which sounds like Henry and Ai on either side of victory.
