Artist Statement
I have always drawn from nature, inspired by the soft shades of purple tree trunks, hazy blue skies, iridescent green moss, and the silhouettes of twigs after a rain storm. Trees represent a reverent and stately connection to our earth. Lately I've been concerned about the treatment of our environment, from mountaintop mining to the Pacific garbage patch, to the clearing of land in our neighborhoods. Much of my work responds to this. Fortunately, nature has its way of regenerating itself regardless of our haste, that is its beauty, it shows up most often in places we least expect, that is what always surprises and delights me. Such as seeing beautiful fungi in the woods that remind me of seashells, white pristine and delicate. I delight in an environment that is raw and full of variety. I see layers in nature as I place my mark on paper, sometimes delicate other times full of energy, color and texture. I hope my work helps to give pause to the beauty of nature in all its chaos.

Artist Bio
Jill Vaughn is a visual artist and painting instructor. Working from life, not literally but drawn from everyday, sometimes ordinary surroundings, using watercolor, oil paint, pencil and photography. Ms. Vaughn reflects, “I am inspired by the beauty of color that emerges after careful observation. Letting the paint speak for itself and keeping paint fresh are always worthy challenges. I enjoy the freedom of line and expression, where the mark is honest and intuitive and the stroke becomes the form. I am inspired by African rhythms, the healing powers of salt water, artists that persist and vast western landscapes.” Ms. Vaughn earned her Bachelors in Fine Art from the Rhode Island School of Design where she majored in painting with concentrations in drawing and printmaking. She studied independently in Rome, Italy, and exhibits actively in Connecticut and at Gallery One in Old Saybrook, CT. Her work is in numerous collections including the Pfizer Corporation, Quinnipiac College, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, the Middlesex Emergency Clinic in Essex, and The U.S. Trust Corporation. Ms. Vaughn was the former President of the Essex Art Association and council member. Since 1999, she has been the Art Department Head at the Oxford Academy teaching art and photography to high school students. Ms. Vaughn has also taught watercolor painting at the Wesleyan University's Green Street Art Center in Middletown. Known for her fresh and vibrant use of color, Ms. Vaughn is often seen painting in plein air by a local garden, boat yard or in the woods at Chatfield Hollow.
