Artist Statement
I am interested in the relationship between desire and necessity, the clashing of the ideal and the actual. The inadequacy of a rationalist program of structuring a culture in constant flux results in its having to constantly revise, regroup, and accommodate.
My work is an expression of this dialectical nature of culture. The recent work consists of large-scale paintings that use the whimsical vernacular of pop culture within the context of the Modernist tradition of geometric abstraction. The stripe/check patterns and colors function formally, but are also socially ubiquitous. The process is precise and methodical, but the compositions are awkward and unresolved. The paintings are ironic in a sense, but they are not cynical. They are a celebration of the human within the rational.

MANIAC is Multi-media, Artist, Network, Idea exchange, And Collaboration. Art is about the exchange of ideas, and this is often mediated through an institutional venue like a gallery, school, or publication. My goal for this group is to provide a vehicle for artists to share thoughts about each others work, discuss current topics informing art, work collaboratively in creating works of art, and to curate/install shows (Manic Episodes).
