Artist Statement
My abstract compositions are inspired by the visual power of marks, lines and rhythms of written languages and by colors, lines, and shapes found in ancient cultures, in the streets and on the walls of my native Italy, and in everyday life.

I am also intrigued by the marks found in handwriting and signatures, since they reflect our individuality and sometimes are the only thing left behind to attest to our presence. I enjoy deconstructing handwriting to isolate and freely reassemble their elements to create an abstract
“portrait of the mind”.

My interest in marks and signs as works of the mind have also led me to experiment with images traditionally associated with science, to extract shapes and motifs to create original abstract works where shapes and lines interact to create visual tales of the imagination.

Artist Bio
An Italian born artist, Maria Morabito grew up in Rome where she developed her life long interest in art and neuroscience. Her life in Rome has brought her in touch with antiquity, the luminosity and colors of mosaics, and the weathering of the frescoes. She moved to New York City in her late 20's and she lived in Manhattan for several years before moving to Connecticut. From the years she lived in Manhattan, she learned to treasure the vitality and excitement hidden in visual traces left by every day life, and the appreciation for free individual expression.

She lives both in Boston, Massachusetts, and in Branford, Connecticut. Maria Morabito's paintings and monoprints have been featured in exhibitions in galleries and cultural centers, including the Grossman Gallery of The Museum School of the Museum of Fine Arts and the Bromfield Gallery in Boston, MA; The Kathryn Schultz Gallery, Cambridge, MA; The Burt Chernow Galleries, Housatonic Museum of Art, Bridgeport, CT; the City Gallery, the Erector Square Gallery, and Artspace in New Haven, CT; and the Moira Fitzsimmons Arons Art Gallery in Hamden, CT.
