Artist Statement

Stream of consciousness and a rich store of personal memories are the starting place for my prints and drawings. My interest in energy and power, in the widest sense, provide a central theme through which I channel my experiences. I value the emotive power of color, and layer my work with saturated color and energy related imagery: strewn power lines, loopy crayon scribbles and scratchy surface textures. I intend my art to be seen sequentially, so that it has a cinematic narrative force, evoking subconscious memories and narratives.

My work is about exploration and the unknown territory it brings. I respond intuitively to materials and develop a series of related but varied imagery based on what's in front of me at the time. “Errors” are embraced and give cosmic meaning to the work. My intent is to communicate the joy that lies in the transformation of the familiar to the unexpected.

Automatic Psychedelic Beakers are a series of flourescent oil pastel drawings drawn in a print shop, featuring funnels, measuring cups and beakers from the etching room. Placing heavy bristol paper on top of the large etching hot plate, I drew blind contour drawings of the assorted vessels. As I drew, the heated metal surface melted the oil sticks allowing my lines to pool and glide across the paper. I drew in an "automatic" and direct manner, creating a series of fluid, caucophanous line drawings. The works can be viewed sequentially or as individual drawings.
