Artist Statement
Latitude 41.3 Project: My work is frequently voyeuristic: surreptitiously watching other people's lives from afar. I'm just starting to play around with an idea where I would “travel” around the world, via the internet, along New Haven's latitude of 41.3 degrees, which goes through Portugal, Spain, Corsica, Italy, Albania, Macedonia, Greece, Turkey, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, China, North Korea, and Japan. Gava, Many of the titles come from writers and poets from the country I've depicted. In an interesting coincidence, an acquaintance of mine, age 21, has spent this past summer walking across Asia through some of the same territory. Hanibal Taubes' very interesting blog can be seen at twosmall.ipower.com/blog. I'm not sure where my virtual trip around the world will end up, but it has been an interesting experiment so far.

If you live in the New Haven area and were to dig a hole in your backyard straight through to the other side of the world along our latitude, you would end up not in China but rather in Gava, Kyrgyzstan. [Since I first wrote that, I realized I am wrong about the geography. The other side of the world is in China, just south of the Gobi Desert. Math is not my strong suit.]
