Artist Statement
My work is dedicated to the memory of my father William Holub, a decorated World War II Army Air Force navigator, who died last year at the age of 90. Along with his medals and discharge papers, he had preserved a 1942 documentary yearbook produced by the Army containing photographs of the navigator candidates with whom he had trained in San Marcos, TX. I was initially drawn to the classic studio lighting of that era, which I've always loved, and decided to paint a series of them in a refined illustrational style employing graphic design elements that, together with an intimate size, would also evoke the period.

These portraits explore what it means to serve a greater good and inevitably face the uncertainties that accompany self-sacrifice. The circles surrounding the portraits are haloes and targets at the same time. Poignantly, the military recruitment center around the corner from Artspace also serves as a living reminder that, almost 70 years after WW2, we are still at war.
