Artist Statement
My latest work is a collection of mark making on canvas, paper and board. I combine a disciplined, formal painting process with the raw spontaneity of chance and intuition. I approach each piece with an understanding of a physical image and allow internal forces of perception and impulse to collide with the external forces of possibility and playfulness. Although I experiment with new methods of application, my work remains driven by the materiality of paint. During each exploration my goal is to emphasize the physicality of the paint medium. I leave traces of my application and process to emphasize a gritty, tactile quality. Language found its way into my work and dances alongside the physicality of paint. Text serves to energize the physicality of the painted surface while I momentarily harness logic, intuition and guesswork.
