Artist Statement
Karleen Loughran, a resident of Hamden, CT, began her artistic career in Chicago where she studied at the Art Institute of Chicago at the age of 11. She received her BFA in studio art in 1979 from Michigan State University studying with the renown printmaker John DeMartelly and the abstract painter Allen Leepa. She did a semester in London with British artists Anthony Wishaw and John Hoyland. In 1985 she earned her MFA in Painting from the School of Visual Arts in New York City where she studied with the contemporary artists Jackie Windsor, Sandro Chia, Lucio Pozzi and two professors who have had a profound and lasting influence on her work -- Robert Mangold and Elizabeth Murray. Whether abstract or representational, her paintings unite formal concerns with a meditative and emotive mood. Her geometric and organic patches of color grounded and demarcated by the rough-edged clay create a dynamic sense of movement. Karleen has her work in corporate and private collections.
