Artist Bio
Martha Lewis has been drawing since before she could walk. It was such an important part of her thinking process that no one around her was really surprised when she chose to pursue this methodology professionally.

Born in Boston, Massachusetts, she did her studies at the Cooper Union in New York, where she earned her B.F.A. Several years later she received her M.F.A from Yale University.
Subsequently she has taught drawing through the College Seminar Program at Yale University, and at Columbia University.

She currently lives in the USA and Europe. An inveterate traveler, Martha is of the peripatetic school of thought, and does most of her work in temporary studios on the road. She claims that this improvisational aspect to her practice creates challenges and opportunities which enrich and enliven her process.

Primarily a painter and drafts-person, Lewis has done projects including editing and printing her own fictional newspaper in Oxford, UK, leading groups of school children in making 6ft totem poles on wheels from recycled materials, creating sets and costumes for a production of the Magic Flute and a producing a virtual book - Glossary & Index - from an outdated computer manual into which she inserted the history of the book and the history of the computer.

Martha is a proud recipient of a 2010 artist fellowship award from the Connecticut Commission on Culture and Tourism, for her works on paper.

In April, 2009 she curated the exhibition Yarn Theory at PS122 Gallery in New York, which featured knitted and crocheted models, structures and objects created by artists, mathematicians and scientists.

Currently, in addition to her studio practice, Martha is collaborating on a web-based project -Maps of the Floating World -with noted science fiction author Chris Moriarty.

Martha's work is in the collection of Nuffield College in Oxford, The Boston Public Library, MA, and Chapman University, Orange, Ca. where it is on permanent display in the library, as well as in private collections in the U.S.A and Europe.

A selection of her works on paper are available for viewing and purchase at Central Booking Gallery, Brooklyn, NY, the Flatfile at Pierogi 2000 in Brooklyn, NY, and at the Flatfile at Artspace, New Haven, CT.
