Predatory Lending - 2009 - collage - 15" x 11 1/4" - $350.00 The Credit Crisis of the last year has provided me with plenty to think about. I embarked on a series of collages to help me to understand and come to terms with the complex issues implicit in our financial meltdown. I find in my work a meditative place to explore ideas and notions that have proven perplexing. For one thing, we were all introduced to a whole lexicon of new phrases… things we never knew we needed phrases for. Like “predatory lending”. These are words I would not necessarily have applied to our local banks. Subprime Mortgage - 2009 - collage - 15" x 11 1/4" - $350.00 Or “sub prime mortgage”. I guess someone needed a way to refer to the exotic and complicated “products” that those “predatory lenders” were selling to people. Every thing must have a name! I find the act of slicing through the paper (mostly with tiny curved nail scissors) to be both relaxing and invigorating. The variety of line obtainable is limitless. It's fascinating to see how closely I can duplicate or emulate a line that I have just created in order to obtain a near mirror image. Toxic Assets - 2009 - collage - 15" x 11 1/4" - $350.00 Would anyone have thought their mortgage, their house, their home would be a "toxic asset"? And so my education in the heady world of financial disaster continues. This is all especially ironic as my partner and I have just begun looking for a house. I work with recycled magazines, gleaned from my local library. I find it reassuring that my collages exploring our financial mishaps are being cobbled together from magazines such as "Forbes" and "The Economist" as well as "Time" and "Newsweek" , "Vogue" and "Details". They are all part of the issues I'm exploring and part of the problem. Particularly enlightening are magazines that are several years old. My how our attitudes and concerns change!
