Artist Statement
My work examines the interconnectedness between the individual and the collective. Having lived in two different cultures—the United States, a western culture that is often characterized as individualistic, and Korea, my native culture, which has been characterized as a collective—this idea has raised questions for me at many different levels.
I accumulate small, individual objects or patterns and use them to create drawings or large, multipart drawing installations. When these tiny and seemingly insignificant individual pieces are gathered together, they generate a powerful existence as a collective body. The labor-intensive and repetitive process is employed to highlight and pay homage to individuals and the collective and the everyday activities of life.
