Artist Statement
These pieces begin by taking a direct rubbing from a previously made painting on wood. The raised surface and distinct texure of the paintings makes them ideal subjects for rubbings. Later, I add selective color and obsessive detail.
Indian Miniatures, Asian Art and Manuscript Illumination inform my work, as do images by Chuck Close and Philip Guston. I respond to the luxury and intricacy in these works, as well as the intimacy and strangeness of the viewing experience.
Although inspired by tradition, my work also refers to the technology surrounding us. The use of color and mark making relates to the detail and ornamentation in miniatures as well as the pixilated image. Connections to the microscopic, organic and cosmic have also been noted. While formal considerations guide much of the imagery, my identity and personal history are also reflected.
