Guy Bennett, Auctioneer
In July 2009, Guy Bennett formed Pelham Holdings, a trading company based in New York. In its first two years of operations, Pelham Holdings has aggressively allocated funds in all principal markets including international real estate, financial, and art totalling in excess of $4 billion.
Prior to Pelham Holdings, Mr. Bennett spent thirteen years at Christie’s. He started his career in 1997 as a specialist for 20th Century Art and in 2001 joined the Impressionist and Modern Art department, becoming Head of the Impressionist and Modern Art Evening Sales in 2004 and International Head of the department in 2006. In that capacity, he not only acted as a major business getter but was also responsible for the evening sales’ presentation and promotion. Guy Bennett has earned his place in art market history books as he headed the most valuable sale ever in the history of auctioneering: the Impressionist and Modern Art Evening Sale in November 2006 which totaled just below half a billion dollars. The sale included legendary masterpieces such as four Klimt paintings restituted to the heirs of the Bloch Bauer family, a fabulous Kirchner Berlin street scene and Gauguin’s magnificent L’Homme à la Hâche, with all three painters setting new world auction records in the sale. Barely one year later, Mr. Bennett accomplished the stunning feat of organizing the second most valuable sale ever, when the evening sale of Impressionist and Modern Art totaled $396 million in November 2007. Other major successes include the sale of Van Gogh’s L’Arlésienne fetching $40.3 million (May 2006), the fourth highest price for a work by the artist at auction, Brancusi’s L’oiseau dans l’espace, which sold in May 2005 for $27.5 million, setting a world auction record for Brancusi and at the time, a record for any sculpture, and Claude Monet’s Le bassin aux nymphéas, which sold for a world record price of $80.4 million. Mr. Bennett also played an integral role in the record-setting sale of the Collection of Yves Saint Laurent in February 2009, which totaled $443.1 million.
A native of England, Mr. Bennett earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in the History of Arts at the University of California, Berkeley in 1995 and completed his post-graduate work in the History of Arts from Oxford University, England in 1996. He now resides in New York with his wife, son and daughter.
